Delaware-Friday

Scott, Emily, Lauren, Nicholas, and I decided to go to Assateague Island in Maryland.

Assateague Island National Seashore is located close to Chincoteague Island, Virginia and Ocean City, Maryland. Assateague contains over 37 miles of pristine beach. More than 300 wild ponies wander the beaches, inland pine forest, and salt marshes. Assateague became a National Park in 1965 and together with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service refuge and State Park, the land and water boundaries of Assateague Island total over 48,000 acres in Maryland & Virginia.

Some people believe that the wild ponies of Assateague arrived on Assateague Island when a Spanish galleon cargo ship (with a cargo of horses) sank off the coast and the horses swam to shore. Others believe the wild horses arrived there via early colonial settlers. Recently in 1997, a Spanish shipwreck was discovered off Assateague Island, which lends credit to the first theory. In any event, the ponies have become well adapted to the seashore ecosystem. Wild horses feed on saltmarsh cordgrass, dune grasses, bayberry twigs, rosehips & persimmons.

Seahorses

Holding a horseshoe crab

When we first saw this horse we thought it was a model of a horse because it was right by the entrance to the park where we paid our entry fee.  Turns out it was a real horse!

A little scared of the horses

Looking for a scratching post

Found one!

Walking to the beach looking for horses

Found some!

They just stood there the whole time sleeping

A crab...can you spot it?

Idiots who were way to close to the horses.

Nicholas enjoying the horses

The bridge is the distance is the one we crossed over to get to the island

As we were leaving, this group of horse appeared.  Once jumped the little rail and so we stopped the car and waited.  The rest decided to walk along the path past us.

Scott went here when he was a kid.  It is a hotel.  Inside it has a pool, indoor ice rink, etc.

The kids wanted to ride the carousel, however it was broken.

So, they rode the ice cream truck!

Brothers!

Famous Daniel pose

Awwwww...

Nana and the boys
